If it is a phone interview, I am assuming is is a pre-screen before a face-to-face interview.

You will likely be asked basic questions about yourself and your experience. They will want to see how flexible you are with schedules, why you want the job, what you know about the company, what experience you have with computers, and get an understanding of your experience with providing customer service and dealing with difficult customers, as well as your ability to work in a team environment.

They will also gauging your telephone manner.

When I went for mine.. i wore jeans and a button down shirt. Then again my bosses didn't really care what I wore, they just wanted to make sure that I had some intelligence. But i would wear a button down shirt with a tie if you wanted.
I have no dress code, and I have tons of free time. But good luck! What state will you be working at?

The first call centre was probably just the operator since in the early days you couldn't actually dial a number so you had to phone them and ask them to put you through to Joe Bloggs

You certainly have few options. You can become a manager, a team leader or an operation manager in the call centre. And as you mentioned if you don't want to work for a call centre forever then if you sell financial product then you can pursue a sales/marketing career. I don't think its a dead end.
